HIIT (high intensity interval training) has taken the world by storm over the past decade. Let’s explore the pros and cons of this trend.

What is HIIT training?

HIIT is a workout that alternates short periods of intense exercise with brief recovery periods. HIIT typically combines cardio and strength training exercises and is designed to boost your heart rate. You’ll typically work harder than you do in a normal cardio workout by completing rounds of exercise in 30-second to 3-minute bursts followed by a short recovery.

HIIT Pros

  • Fun and fast. It’s a quick and furious workout, and some individuals love that challenge. Generally, HIIT classes are 30 minutes or less, making it a fast and efficient way to cross “workout” off your to-do list.
  • Social camaraderie. HIIT workouts can be done alone or at home, but they are popular group classes that boost morale and social connectivity.
  • Improved metabolic rate. Several studies have demonstrated HIIT’s ability to increase your metabolic rate for hours after exercise.

HIIT Cons

  • Safety. HIIT can increase the risk of injury due to high-impact movements and overall intensity of the workout. Due to the fast-paced nature of the exercise, ensure you are utilizing good form and are aware of limitations.
  • Overtraining. It can be easy to overtrain which may lead to fatigue, injury, and burnout.
  • Requires recovery time. HIIT training should not be done every day. You should aim to recover at least 48 hours between workouts.
  • Beginner friendly? Beginners might not have the right form or level of cardiorespiratory or muscular fitness to enjoy these types of workouts. Give it a try and decide for yourself!

HIIT offers a dynamic approach to fitness with its efficient, time-saving workouts and potential for metabolic enhancement. However, it’s crucial to balance its benefits with awareness of safety considerations, the need for adequate recovery, and its suitability based on individual fitness levels. Whether you’re drawn to its intensity or prefer a gentler routine, exploring HIIT can be a rewarding journey toward achieving your fitness goals.
