Between work deadlines, family needs, and personal goals, life can feel like a nonstop balancing act. But not every responsibility carries the same weight.
Think of your responsibilities like balls you are juggling. Some are plastic, others are glass.
If you drop a plastic ball, it might bounce and roll away for a bit, but nothing breaks. Those are the flexible things (the extra project, the volunteer commitment, the perfectly clean kitchen). But the glass balls (your health, your relationships, your integrity, your core priorities) will shatter if neglected.
Reflection helps you tell the difference. It’s not about juggling faster, it’s about knowing which balls you can safely set down, and which ones must be handled with care.
How to Reconnect with What Matters
Define your “glass” priorities. What truly can’t be dropped? Identify the three to five areas that matter most. For example, career development, health, family, and rest. Let these guide your decisions about where to spend your time and energy each week.
Accept that some “plastic” can wait. The extra project, the social event, the perfectly folded laundry – these are flexible. Letting them go isn’t failure, it’s focus.
Notice the trade-offs. Every “yes” costs time and energy. Ask yourself whether what you’re saying yes to supports or strains your glass priorities. Block space on your calendar to review your week. Ask: What worked? What drained me? What deserves more attention next week?
Protect your energy like a resource. Pay attention to the tasks, meetings, and relationships that energize you versus those that deplete you. Use that insight to delegate, simplify, or redesign where possible.
Reassess regularly. Priorities evolve as projects shift and family seasons change. Make reflection a monthly practice so you can adapt with intention, not guilt.
You don’t need to juggle everything perfectly, you just need to know which balls are glass and which are plastic. When your professional and personal priorities align with your values, every yes becomes more meaningful, and every no becomes an act of peace.
