Some thrive in the warmer months, while others truly feel like they’re melting from the heat, the social obligations, or children’s expectations. If that sounds like you, complete five of the below activities to better enjoy the summer season.
Set boundaries. You don’t have to go on a vacation. You don’t have to do everything you did in past years if your timeline or family dynamic has changed. Limit obligations to what you know you can handle and will enjoy.
Make plans you enjoy. Create a summer bucket list including small and simple things like “blowing a dandelion or eating a popsicle.” Include things that are fun for not just the kids, but things you want to do too. Writing them down will you give you ideas on how to spend your day, be present, and make memories.
Wake up early and plan indoor activities for mid-day. Use your time wisely. Get outside for a morning walk or take the kids to the park first thing. Pack a breakfast the night before and get sun exposure before the temperatures begin to rise.
Keep your house cool. Open the windows in the morning and night when it cools down to promote air flow. Avoid turning on the oven and opt for crockpot meals, salads, or sandwiches instead.
Hydration is key. Pack plenty of water for any outdoor adventures. Staying hydrated will help boost moods and reduce the likelihood of heat stroke.
Clothing choices matter. Opt for breathable, flowy fabrics that block out UV rays. Stay in the shade or wear a hat to help stay cool.
Diet considerations. Heavy meals tend to make you feel sluggish. Try to stick to lighter, chilled foods and snacks with high water content such as watermelon, berries, and cucumbers.
Reapply sunscreen. Don’t forget the SPF! Protect your skin to avoid heat stress and sunburn. Reapply every couple of hours.
Take advantage of seasonal produce and events. Go to the local farmer’s market, attend craft fairs, or enjoy outdoor movies. Find activities that only take place in the summer to fill your schedule with. Plan meals and snacks around seasonal produce. Consider planting a garden, flowers, or herbs as another fun way to enjoy the season.
