Summer Survival Mini Challenge

Content provided by the Health & Wellness Team at GBS Benefits

Summer often comes with pressure to make every day count, fill the calendar, and create memorable experiences. But the best summer doesn’t have to be the busiest one. Whether you’re managing work, family responsibilities, or simply trying to stay cool, these simple strategies can help you enjoy the season at your own pace.

Set boundaries. You don’t have to go on a vacation or do everything you did in past years if your timeline or family dynamic has changed. Limit obligations to what you know you can handle and will enjoy.

Make plans you enjoy. Create a summer bucket list including small and simple things like eating a popsicle, enjoying an evening walk, or star gazing. Include things that are fun for not just the kids, but things you want to do too. Writing them down will give you ideas on how to spend your day, be present, and make memories.

Wake up early and plan indoor activities for mid-day. Use your time wisely by getting outside for a morning walk or taking the kids to the park first thing. Pack a breakfast the night before and get sun exposure before the temperatures begin to rise.

Keep your house cool. Open the windows in the morning and night when it cools down to promote air flow. Avoid turning on the oven and opt for crockpot meals, salads, or sandwiches instead.

Stay hydrated. Pack plenty of water for outdoor adventures. Staying hydrated can help support your mood and reduce the risk of heat-related illness.

Dress for the heat. Opt for breathable, flowy fabrics that block out UV rays. Stay in the shade or wear a hat to help stay cool.

Choose lighter foods. Heavy meals can leave you feeling sluggish. Choose lighter, chilled foods and snacks with high water content, such as watermelon, berries, and cucumbers.

Reapply sunscreen. Don’t forget the SPF! Protect your skin to avoid heat stress and sunburn. Reapply every couple of hours.

Take advantage of seasonal produce and events. Go to the local farmers’ market, attend craft fairs, or watch outdoor movies. Find activities that only take place in the summer to fill your schedule with. Plan meals and snacks around seasonal produce. Consider planting a garden, flowers, or herbs as another fun way to enjoy the season.

The best summer is the one that works for you. Focus on what helps you feel healthy, present, and able to enjoy the season at your own pace.
