Small Habits, Big Impact

Content provided by the Health & Wellness Team at GBS Benefits

Much of what we do each day happens automatically. Routines help us move through life efficiently, but they can also shape our energy, focus, and stress levels without us noticing.

Taking time to reflect on your routines can help you make more intentional choices without needing to change everything at once.

Step 1: Choose a Routine

Identify one everyday habit to put in the spotlight:

  • Your morning start (coffee first, emails first, chaos first?)
  • Your workday flow (breaks, posture, snacks)
  • Your evenings (scrolling, relaxing, rushing to bed)

Step 2: Play Detective (no judgment allowed)

For one week, simply observe:

  • How do I feel during and after this routine?
  • Does it boost my energy or drain it?
  • Does it make my day easier or harder?

Step 3: Make a Call

After a week, decide:

  • Keep it – it’s doing its job
  • Tweak it – a small change could help
  • Ditch it – it no longer fits your life

An Example

Let’s say your routine is checking email first thing in the morning. After a week of noticing, you might realize you feel stressed before the day even starts or your focus drops earlier than usual. A small tweak could be waiting 20 minutes before opening email or starting with coffee, movement, or planning instead.

Now it’s your turn. Choose one routine, pay attention, and see what shifts.
