Celebrate Valentine’s Day by practicing self-care! Self-care is an essential and replenishing act that can improve your happiness, stress-levels, and overall productivity.

Before focusing on others this Valentine’s Day, take a moment to identify self-care activities you can complete within increments of time that work for you. Complete at least two of these activities today and reference this list in the future when needed.

1 minute:

  • Determine and commit to a reasonable bedtime for the day. Some theories state that sleep helps clear abnormal proteins in your brain and consolidates memories, which boosts your overall memory and brain health. Put down your phone and catch some Z’s!
  • Self-care doesn’t have to be by yourself. Make plans to recharge with the people you love to boost social interaction and relationships.
  • Take five deep breaths to recenter yourself.

5 minutes:

  • Declutter one space in your home or office to reduce stress levels. Set the timer for five minutes and clean a folder, drawer, or shelf.
  • Practice positive self-talk or leave words of encouragement on sticky notes.
  • Take a stretch break for added rejuvenation.

15 minutes:

  • Reading for fifteen minutes every day can help reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Stop the scrolling and read a book, article, or newspaper.
  • Reconnecting with nature is a great way to reconnect with yourself. Take a moment to appreciate your surroundings and find beauty wherever you live.
  • Write a thank you note to someone you care about.

30 minutes:

  • Work on a physical jigsaw puzzle for thirty minutes every day. Your brain will thank you for the extra challenge.
  • Share a device-free dinner with your family.
  • Document how you’re feeling today. Get thoughts out of your head and onto paper so you can see them clearly and readjust as needed.

1 hour:

  • Challenge yourself to cook a new and nutritious recipe.
  • Learn something new or catch up on your favorite podcasts.
  • Try a new exercise class, in person or virtually.
