Why is social health so important? Some of the benefits of strong social well-being include lower stress levels, greater self-esteem, and a healthier, longer life. Building successful relationships with family, friends, colleagues, and others can have a positive impact on social health and well-being.
Consider these ideas to cultivate your social wellness.
Connecting
Having strong social connections may help protect overall health and lengthen life. Connect with others who share similar interests or try pursuing new hobbies to meet new people. Some ideas: join a group focused on a favorite hobby, volunteer in community organizations, or try a new class (i.e. fitness, cooking, art, photography, gardening, or music). Trying new activities opens the door to meet and interact with like-minded individuals and build social circles.
Building
Communication is a critical competent to building healthy relationships with others. Be sure to maintain eye contact, be a good listener to those who are talking, and take time to respond in a nurturing way. The ability to communicate feelings, desires, and needs with one another sets the foundation for greater social wellness. When having a conversation with a friend or loved one, remember to be honest, listen without judgment, and compromise when needed so both parties agree on an outcome.
Investing
Maintaining important relationships is key to social health. Give respect in relationships by reaching out, being present, and listening. Communicate and make plans routinely with friends, family, and others to maintain healthy relationships and optimal social health. A strong social network is a place to turn in times of need or when difficult situations arise.
Self-care
It is important to care for yourself in addition to caring for others. There are a variety of self-care methods, so take time to try different things and find what works best for you. Take breaks, maintain your hobbies and interests, and ask for help when needed.
