Enjoying New Adventures

Content provided by the GBS Health & Wellness Team

Summer is the perfect time to try new forms of physical activity while also spending time in nature and appreciating all it has to offer. Engaging in new activities creates opportunities to challenge your physical limits, reconnect with self and nature, and make unforgettable memories with family and friends.

Here are a few adventures and activities to explore this summer. Invite others to join in on the fun!

For the humanitarian at heart…

Volunteer to plant trees, participate in a charity walk/run, start a community garden, or join a local trail cleanup event.

For the outdoor enthusiast…

Find a new hiking trail, go backpacking, take up trail running, learn how to rock climb/rappel, or try out water sports, such as windsurfing or standup paddleboarding.

For those looking for family fun…

Put together an outdoor scavenger hunt (think plants, birds, clouds), have a water balloon war, set up a slip-n-slide, do sidewalk art, or plant wildflowers.

For those with a competitive nature…

Get a partner for pickleball, try your hand at axe throwing, or set up some yard games (i.e. bocce ball, badminton, volleyball).

For those with limited mobility…

Find wheelchair accessible trails at https://www.traillink.com/activity/wheelchair-accessible-trails/, try out paddle sports (i.e. kayaking or canoeing), spend a day on the lake fishing, or explore a local garden or park.

For the animal lovers…

Check out a new dog park, set up a play date with a furry friend, find a local dog walk fundraiser, or build an agility course in your backyard.

Pro tip: Don’t forget to pack essentials you’ll need for your adventure. This could include water, sun protection, proper fuel (see this month’s From the Dietitians Desk for suggestions), and/or a first aid kit.
