When it comes to body acceptance, two camps of thought seem to dominate the conversation. Some people subscribe to body positivity, or loving their bodies regardless of shape, size, color, gender, or ability. Others embrace body neutrality, which focuses on appreciating what the body can do. No matter which school of thought you agree with, treating yourself with kindness, respect, and compassion is always appropriate. Try out three of the following suggestions to help you move in the right direction.

  • Focus on the unique traits and capabilities you have.
  • Focus on your health. Feed your body with mindful eating, plenty of rest, and stress management.
  • Dress to celebrate your unique body with confidence and care. Choose clothing that fits well and makes you feel comfortable and beautiful, rather than clinging to outdated sizes or styles. Embrace your current self and let your wardrobe reflect the love and respect you have for your body.
  • Reframe how you think about your body. Consider adopting positive affirmations that encourage showing respect for your body.
  • Avoid self-deprecating humor. It’s important not to take life too seriously and humor can be a great way to defuse embarrassing situations. However, when all your jokes are based on mocking yourself it can negatively affect your mental health.
  • Social media audit. Unfollow accounts that trigger feelings of comparison and self-doubt.
  • Incorporate stretching. Take a moment to thank your body for what it did for you today.
  • Practice self-care. Take care of yourself by participating in activities you enjoy, treating yourself to a bath, or listening to your favorite music during your commute.
  • Create a list of people you admire for their contributions and example. Consider what characteristics and personality traits were important to their success and accomplishments.
