We live in a multicultural society, and embracing the values of various cultures only strengthens our understanding and appreciation of the world. In a society that is increasingly interconnected, recognizing and cherishing diverse minds and cultures is essential to global growth.
Creating a workplace and community founded on trust and safety is an important aspect of celebrating diversity. As Harvard Business Review phrases it, “When the workplace feels challenging but not threatening […] oxytocin levels in our brains rise, eliciting trust and trust-making behavior.” All members of an organization should feel personally valued and welcome as peers treat others with dignity and respect, regardless of background, demographics, or identity terms.
The Value of Diversity
Increasing Knowledge. Interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds broadens our horizons and encourages diverse thought, collaboration, and curiosity. It teaches tolerance, acceptance, and teamwork skills.
Vibrant Community. When people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and identities come together it creates a robust and vibrant community. We learn to appreciate others’ differences and what makes people unique.
Experience New Cultures. Learning of others’ traditions, history, and heritage can be an enlightening and enriching experience. Embracing diversity leads to a society focused on equality and minimizes discrimination or prejudice. It creates a safe community and workplace for all, despite diverse backgrounds.
Better Relationships at work and in the community. Feeling respected and valued leads to feelings of trust and safety. Help others know you understand and appreciate them by giving them the time and effort they deserve.
Use the following strategies to embrace the diversity in your community, neighborhood, and workplace.
- Model inclusive behavior. Show willingness to improve, admit mistakes, and commit yourself to continued learning.
- Use inclusive language. Avoid using gender-specific words, avoid assumptions. When in doubt, ask clarifying questions and do your best.
- Embrace diversity. Focus on what you have in common with others. Actively listen, provide support, and look for opportunities to learn.
- Lead with kindness. You may not understand others’ backgrounds, traditions, or decisions. Leading with kindness is a fool-proof way to help others feel like they belong.
