Summer Safety

Summertime inevitably brings time spent with family and friends enjoying the great outdoors.  Your own backyard can be the source of many fun activities, but with these activities comes substantial risk if proper safety precautions are not taken.  Here are a few summer safety tips to keep your outdoor gatherings fun and accident free.

Pools:  Make sure your guests using the pool know how to swim, and don’t let anyone swim alone. Keep adequate lifesaving equipment in the pool area. Keep the pool area free of glass bottles and other potential accident hazards. Make sure the pool area is locked to keep young children from entering without supervision.

Barbecue Grills:  Keep your barbecue grill on a level surface away from your home, garage, and landscaping. Place the grill in a location that doesn’t require people to walk too close to hot surfaces and away from where children are playing. Use a barbecue mitt that fits high on your forearm, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.

Trampolines:  Limit the number of people on the trampoline at one time. Establish rules for safe use, and communicate those rules to your guests who use the trampoline.

Play Sets:  Regularly check play sets for sturdiness, replacing rusty bolts or other elements in need of repair. Install play sets on a level surface, and cover the ground with woodchips or other “soft-landing” material to prevent injuries.

Fire Pits:  Never allow children to start a fire alone, and always make sure they have adult supervision during the entire length of the use of the fire pit.  Keep the area around the fire pit clear of weeds, garbage, and other flammable materials.  Extinguish the fire completely after use.
