Josh Waitzkin, chess prodigy and author, swears by the soporific method as he has employed its practice into his personal and professional life for 20 years.

Whether you are “considering a new career path, mulling over a hostile conversation with a lazy co-worker, or thinking about quitting your job,” Waitzkin advises taking the following steps before heading to bed:

  1. Think deeply; “[let] the issue flood your mind.”
  2. “Move onto another task—working out, folding laundry, prepping dinner,” etc.
  3. Place a notebook within arm’s reach of your bed.
  4. The moment you wake up, write down what comes to mind.

While this method may not be the solution to all dilemmas, “you might discover a few creative thoughts that help shape your next steps.”
